‘Saving over 3 tonnes of carbon emissions’
Dubai Holding’s stunning exhibition space at COP28 was built in the pioneering K-BRIQ®, showcasing a highly sustainable and low carbon masonry structure on the world stage. Designed by pre-eminent global architecture practice, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the designers collaborated with their client, global investment company, Dubai Holding, to showcase responsible environmental stewardship, focusing on the concept of circularity in their centrepiece space’s design and build. The Showcase Space in the Energy Transition Zone within COP28UAE’s Green Zone is a testament to the harmony between innovation and sustainability.
The K-BRIQ® wall is built with 7,000 sustainable bricks made from recycled waste from the construction industry, saving over 3 tonnes of carbon emissions compared to using a traditional brick. The curved wall is paired with seating produced from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified timber and a living wall containing greenery, giving Dubai Holding a sustainable space to engage with its guests. Kenoteq also presented seminars to visitors within the amphitheatre space.
The exhibit was deconstructed at the end of COP28 and moved to the entrance of Dubai Holding’s Headquarters as a legacy to COP28 and inspiration for the future.
The wall attracted significant global interest within the show, and was visited by Scotland’s First Minister and the Minister for Transport, Net Zero and Just Transition, whilst King Charles visited the company’s showcase wall at Heriot-Watt University Dubai’s new campus, which created a feature within the ClimateHub taking place there during COP28.
The wall was deconstructed post-event and rebuilt in the entrance to the Headquarters of Dubai Holding serving as a wholly sustainable legacy to the event and enforcing Dubai Holding’s commitment to sustainability.
“With climate action at the heart of our firm’s mission, we knew the design of this space offered an important opportunity to showcase new sustainable building materials. Kenoteq’s K-BRIQ® demonstrates the importance of innovation and collaboration to help the built environment achieve a low carbon future.”
Yasemin Kologlu, Principal at SOM
