‘The overall project used half the embodied carbon of a typical residential extension’
The Waste Not, Want Not House in East London, designed by Whittaker Parsons used predominantly recycled products in the rear signal storey extension and landscaping to the inter-war semi-detached property.
The overall project used half the embodied carbon of a typical residential extension, helped amiably by the use of Kenoteq’s Medero Dark Grey K-Briq for a large feature wall with integrated shelving which leads the eye into the garden. Using the K-Briq over conventional bricks saved the project 0.3 tonnes of CO2e. The K-Briqs employed also saved 1.4 tonnes of materials, mostly construction and demolition waste from landfill, whilst the project recycled a further 5.7 tonnes of rubble, salvaged from forming the structural openings, in the rubble foundations.
The striking Medero Dark Grey interior feature wall with integrated shelving is designed in a stacked brickbond and provides a powerful backdrop for the black & white photography displayed on the shelving. It boldly connects the new dining kitchen, living and play area to the newly landscaped garden and juxtaposes dramatically with the pink-rendered extension and patio area to which it leads.
